You know all of those sappy, warm-and-fuzzy, happy-but-kinda-sad feelings you get when you’re somewhere and someone special you love is, say, 1,400 miles away and you’re not able to be with them on their first birthday?
That’s how I’m feeling today.
I’m working in Chicago. Baby Jack is home in Utah.
He’s about to dive into a birthday cake. I’m in full-blown sentimental mode.
You can see where this is leading … baby pictures! I spent a good chunk of time this afternoon in my spare time looking at a lot of photos my wife Heather and I have taken since Jackson Drew entered our lives on Nov. 8, 2012. I’d tell you what time he was born, how much he weighed and how tall he was, but I’m his dad. Ask his mom if you want to know that stuff.
To say Jack has brightened the Genessy home would be the understatement of the year. I’d say more cheesy stuff, but these pictures do the trick:
Love this photo of newborn Jackson and his beautiful mom, who was on enough drugs after this C-section to allow me to snap a shot in the delivery room. Jack gave us a scare at first with some lung issues that kept him in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit for a few days, but he’s been a proverbial bundle of joy the past year.

Behind that cute grin of Aidan’s is a brother’s creative mind busy plotting all of the crazy things he’s going to do to his younger sibling.

Is there anything sweeter than a little girl holding a little boy’s hand? Syd is a great big sis.

The family that feeds Jack together, um, usually ends up fighting about who gets to hold the baby or the bottle or …

This is the best selfie I’ve ever taken. Just happened to get Baby Jack laughing at one of my hilarious jokes. Or he had gas at the perfect time. Maybe both.

My Facebook photo from Feb. 14, 2013: “Some other dude is my wife’s Valentine this year.” The freeloader didn’t pay for the date, though.

This is the stage in Jack’s infancy where he really resembled his older brother’s curly hair.

Obligatory baby bath shot! He can thank me later for cropping it (uh, just the photo … moving on!).

I came home from a business trip for a fun Super Bowl party in February. Baby Jack got RSV, Family MVP (his mommy) got pooped out and we ended up watching the game on a 20-inch TV in our room. It was good to be home, though.

One of my favorites. Just before we moved Baby Jack to a crib in his own bedroom, he peeked over the bassinet by our bed to give us a good-morning greeting. I call this photo: “The Rising Son”

Baby Jack likes to sleepwalk.

These two sure smile a lot when they’re together. Then again, they are looking at me. 🙂

Jack is up to some monkey business. Mom is trying to convert someone else to her weird vampire world.

Early first birthday cake before dad left town.

Not to brag, but I helped make this kid and picked the outfit. Ah, who am I fooling? I’m bragging.

Baby Jack is stunned to get caught in the act of toilet papering our bathroom.
